There are many reasons that your rifle may not be performing as accurately as you might like. If you have a custom bolt action rifle, there is one easy step you can take that is almost guaranteed to improve the accuracy of the rifle and that is glass bedding. If you are newer to the world of firearms, you may be confused by the term “glass bedding.” In simple terms, this means that an epoxy-based material is molded onto the rifle stock to fill in any gaps that exist between the stock and the receiver.
Why does glass bedding work so well to improve accuracy? Well, it creates a more rigid and stable foundation. It creates a stiffer action for your rifle and prevents it from reforming under the pressure of use. The harmonics of your weapon are improved, and a repeatable, neutral stress is more likely. After glass bedding is completed, you can expect the action to make full contact with the stock of the rifle.
Because of the possibility of making a mess and getting the epoxy where you don’t want it, glass bedding is a job best left to a professional, certified gunsmith. The rifle will be disassembled in some instances and parts that need to be protected will be covered with wax or clay or another substance. Glass bedding should be considered if the current bedding is cracked or broken in any way. It can become necessary over time after the gun is repeatedly cleaned with certain cleaning agents. If you have noticed accuracy issues with your rifle, glass bedding may give you back the accuracy you want.
