The reasons why people go hunting vary from person to person. Some go for the sport, while others go simply to obtain meat to eat. Today, guns are the most common weapon used when hunting. However, guns weren’t always the choice of weapon for hunters. Keep reading to learn a brief history about guns and other hunting weapons.

How Long Have Guns Been Used for Hunting?

  • Early hunting weapons: Before guns were invented, most hunters used weapons like bows and arrows, spears, and slings. Some required the hunter to get very close to the animal, like spears. Slings and bows, though, were projectile hunting tools that could be used at a distance.
  • Invention of guns: The first record of a firearm was in 1364. Over the next few centuries, the concept and structure of guns advanced and transformed into matchlocks, rifles, and pistols.
  • Hunting with guns: Guns started to be used for shooting game in the 16th century. Firearms, of course, were a huge step up from spears, bows, and slings. The projectile weapons that were previously used were quickly outmatched by guns. However, this also resulted in hunting laws being enacted to restrict the usage of certain weapons and limit the duration of the sport.
