Common Mistakes to Avoid When Learning to Shoot

In our experience, beginners tend to make many of the same mistakes when learning to shoot, so we have put together this article to help you avoid making the same errors yourself. Keep reading to learn a few of the most common mistakes to avoid making in your training classes and on the shooting range.

  • Letting Your Attention Wander – One of the most common mistakes people make when learning any new skill is letting their attention wander during class or during practice. When learning most skills, momentary distraction is not a big deal, but it is a serious problem in this case. It’s important to always pay attention when learning about firearms and how to handle them, as you will need to internalize all the proper safety rules.
  • Showing Off – When learning to shoot, you should not try to show off or look cool. Don’t try to replicate anything you’ve seen in action movies. For example, don’t grip your firearm sideways, as you are likely to get hurt or hurt someone else in the process. Instead, take training and practice sessions seriously and focus on improving your fundamental technique.
  • Ignoring Gun Malfunctions – Another common mistake we see beginners make when learning to shoot is ignoring problems with their guns. If you even suspect there is something wrong with your gun, flag down the instructor right away, while keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Our experts will show you how to safely check your gun and how to resolve the issue. Only once the problem is fixed will we clear you to keep shooting.
